CLOSE CALL -- The new Union Pacific shorter cross-arms were being installed at the Hwy. 290 crossing in downtown Giddings last Friday, and traffic was being narrowed to one lane in each direction while the work was going on. That was backing up traffic in both directions for a block or so around 3 p.m. when a Giddings area resident witnessed a close call at the tracks.
